Center for California Health Workforce Studies

The Center for California Health Workforce Studies (CCHWS) was created in 1997 as one of six regional workforce centers funded by a cooperative agreement with the National Center for Health Workforce Information and Analysis within the US Health Resources and Services Administration's Bureau of Health Professions. The core federal grant has ended, but CCHWS continues to bring together a multi-disciplinary team of investigators to examine critical issues in the distribution, diversity, supply and competence of health professionals in California and other western states.

A comprehensive report on the labor market for licensed nurses in California has been published. This report was written as part of the evaluation of the California Nurse Workforce Initiative. Tables describing the RN and LVN workforces in regions of California are also available. Find the report here and the regional appendix here.

Joanne Spetz analyzed commuting patterns of registered nurses in California, based on the 2006 Survey of RNs. Many counties are predominantly "senders" while others are "receivers", which can affect county-level estimates of RN shortages. You can find the brief report here.

Kevin Grumbach and Beth Mertz were invited to present at the HRSA All Grantee Meeting February 2008. To download these presentations, please click here.
