Collection of Workforce Data by California Health Professions' Regulatory Boards

With current and predicted health care workforce shortages making headlines nationwide, the need for adequate workforce planning based on timely and complete data has become more pressing. The regulatory boards of health professions are in a prime but rarely used position to collect crucial workforce data, including where professionals are practicing, their practice focus or specialization and language skills. Currently, there is no mandate at the federal level for this information and therefore states or individual boards themselves decide whether to collect information, what information to collect, and how to fund any efforts to do so. The result is often severe gaps in data, lack of longitudinal data for trend analysis, or incompatible data sources that make comparisons challenging. This project aims to compare what efforts are currently being undertaken in California, in addition to a limited number of other states, to show the breadth of data being requested and aid discussions currently underway to expand and improve collection efforts.

This study is a project of the Health Workforce Tracking Collaborative, which is funded by The California Wellness Foundation, The California Endowment, and the California HealthCare Foundation and administered at the UCSF Center for the Health Professions.
