Mental Health Workforce Tracking

This project focuses on the mental health workforce in California and is designed with two components. The first component will be updated description of the current and future mental health workforce including labor market supply and demand as well as demographic and educational characteristics. The second component will include a qualitative assessment of critical mental health workforce policy issues in the state.

The research team will conduct interviews with representatives of various communities that compose the mental health system. This will include county administrators, union workers, educational institution leaders, and other constituents of the mental health community. In addition to gaining perspective from the mental health community, the research team will also analyze data on trends in education and the labor market. A literature review will be conducted to investigate models of patient recovery and implications for the mental health workforce.

This study is a project of the Health Workforce Tracking Collaborative, which is funded by The California Wellness Foundation, The California Endowment, and the California HealthCare Foundation and administered at the UCSF Center for the Health Professions.
