Field: Mitochondrial Genetics

Research Interest:

We are interested in the study of the mechanisms that regulate the expression of the mitochondrial COX1 gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This gene encodes subunit I of the cytochrome c oxidase, which is centrally important to the enzyme. It is the largest subunit of the complex and is an integral part of the catalytic core of the enzyme, which is shared with subunit II. Expression of COX1 is very complex and not completely understood. We are investigating the possibility that the synthesis of subunit I is feedback regulated by the presence of the assembled subunit II. In addition, we are studying the role of the MSS51 nuclear gene product in the expression of the COX1 mRNA. This protein has been previously implicated in some posttranscriptional step of COX1 gene expression, probably in translation, but its mechanism of action remains unclear.
