Why a Network for Physician
Education?
THE
PROBLEM
The Changing Health Care Environment
- Employers invest 1 to 2 years of training for new
residency graduates.
- While some on-the-job training may always be necessary,
there is a gap between the skills taught and those required for current
practice environments.
- Many physicians in practice also lack these skills.
- There is no existing credible, accessible resource
that provides high quality materials that teach these skills.
THE CHALLENGE
Creating Resources for Improving Training and Practice
- There is a need for a complete set of accessible
curricular materials to teach skills for effective practice in health
care systems.
- Teaching materials must be of high quality, based
on sound educational principles, and be useful to physicians in busy
clinical environments.
- Those who shape training programs and those who
shape health delivery systems rarely interact.
- To address the gap in skills, there must be input
from the two groups who have intimate knowledge and familiarity with
issues of clinical training and practice.
- There are no good examples of effective partnerships
between academia and health care systems.
THE NETWORK RESPONSE
- Create
a source of high quality, peer-reviewed curricula to teach skills for
practicing effectively in changing health care environments.
- Assure
that curricular materials are shaped by individuals with an understanding
of the issues and tailored to the realities of practice.
- Target
curricular materials to physicians in training and practice.
- Model
an exemplary partnership between physicians in academia and health care
systems.
