RN Workforce Surveys and Analysis

About the study

The California Board of Registered Nursing has asked CCHWS to field two surveys in 2006.

The BRN Survey of RNs obtains information about nurses with active, inactive, and lapsed California RN licenses. The survey asks about employment, education, and perceptions of the nursing profession. The 2006 survey will be mailed to 9,000 nurses in late September, and CCHWS staff will write a report to the BRN summarizing the findings from the survey.

The BRN Annual Schools Survey is conducted annually to better understand nursing education in California. In 2005, the BRN revamped the survey substantially. CCHWS has analyzed the 2005 data and linked it to previous surveys to understand trends in RN education. The 2006 survey will be posted for nursing program directors to complete in November. CCHWS will analyze the 2006 data and examine trends over the past seven years.

The BRN also asked CCHWS to examine reasons nurses ask to have their California licenses endorsed to other states, the characteristics of RNs who have their out-of-state license endorsed to California, different strategies to obtain information about the nursing workforce, and how we can better forecast the demand for RNs.
