The Effect of Hospital
Systems on Nurse Staffing
In the past decade there has been a perception among
the public,
legislators, and health care workers that for-profit companies and large
national corporations have been increasingly taking over hospitals and
health care organizations. This perception is correct. Changes in
hospital ownership, most often seen as purchases by multi-hospital
corporations, have become commonplace in California, and now over half
of the state's hospitals are affiliated with multi-hospital systems.
This study, supported in part by the Public Policy Institute of
California and the California HealthCare Foundation, examines the effect
of changes in hospital ownership on staffing and wages.
