Diversity in the Health Professions

A new report on physician diversity in California has been published. This study presents findings from the California Medical Board Survey of physicians, finding that underrepresentation of minority physicians persists in the state, and that minority physicians are more likely to work in underserved communities and primary care.

The UCSF Center for Health Workforce Studies has completed a comprehensive study of programs attempting to enhance the racial and ethnic diversity of the health professions. The California Endowment has just published the final report of this study, "Strategies to Improve the Diversity of the Health Professions." The report summarizes recent trends in underrepresented minority enrollment in medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, and other health professions schools, inventories public and private programs designed to enhance diversity, and critically reviews the evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to promote diversity in health professions schools.
