California Physicians 2002:
Practice and Perceptions

This report presented survey data from of a representative sample of active patient-care physicians in California. These data, synthesized and presented with qualitative data gathered through a series of California physician focus groups, provided a profile of contemporary physician practice in California.

This report was the second of two reports on the practice of medicine produced by the CWI. The first report, The Practice of Medicine in California: A Profile of the Physician Workforce was released February 2001. CWI physician workforce research efforts explore the impact that changes in health care financing and delivery have had on the practice of individual physicians. Driving the CWI's approach is an interest in how physicians are experiencing external changes and, more importantly, how those experiences affect patient care.

These reports serve as a basis for our ongoing efforts to monitor issues concerning California physicians. The CWI will continue informing policymakers, professionals, administrators and educators, about this crucial profession.
