Nursing in California:
A Workforce Crisis

This project documented major nursing workforce challenges faced by California at the beginning of the 21st century and identified a range of options for meeting these challenges. To explore these issues, staff conducted interviews, focus groups and surveys with industry, labor, education, policy making and nursing leaders; synthesized existing data about the California RN workforce and educational programs in the state; evaluated several scenarios of future nursing workforce supply; presented best practices and recommendations for strategies to combat current workforce pressures as well as future directions in nursing practice and workforce development to meet health system demands.

The project produced an influential report summarizing findings of the study, and several peer-reviewed journal articles concerning the nursing shortage and policies surrounding it.
