The Practice
of Medicine in California: A Profile of the Physician Workforce Widely distributed to policymakers in California and nationally, this report offered a comprehensive profile of the California physician workforce in the year 2000. Using existing and original data, this study provided information about the aggregate supply of physicians, specialty and geographic distribution, demographic characteristics, and educational data about physicians in the state. In addition, this report examined the state of medical practice in California, including trends in practice setting, physician organization, managed care involvement, Medi-Cal participation, financial incentives, earnings, and physicians' overall experience of the practice climate. This report was the first of two physician workforce reports produced by the CWI. The second report, California Physicians 2002: Practice and Perceptions was released December 2002. CWI physician workforce research efforts explore the impact that changes in health care financing and delivery have had on the practices of individual physicians. Driving the CWI's approach is an interest in how physicians are experiencing external changes and, more importantly, how those experiences affect patient care. These reports serve as a basis for the CWI's ongoing efforts to monitor issues concerning California physicians. The CWI will continue informing policymakers, professionals, administrators and educators, about this crucial profession. To download the Executive Summary click here.
